Apples: A Paws-itively Healthy Treat!

Apples are a fantastic source of vitamins A and C, along with fibre, which is so great for a healthy tummy! This makes them a healthy, low-protein, low-fat treat—perfect for senior dogs or pups who need to watch their diet. We especially love classic varieties packed with Vitamin C and powerful antioxidants. Be sure to wash them thoroughly and remove the cores, seeds, stems, and any leaves. The skin is a great source of nutrients, but we sometimes remove it just to be safe and avoid any pesticide risk!

That satisfying texture is not only fun, but it also helps scrape off plaque and keeps her teeth clean and healthy. They're also a super low-calorie, guilt-free way to keep her entertained.

  • Cucumbers are a fantastic treat for a pup on a diet because they're packed with vitamins and are super low in calories. They're a healthy energy boost, and I love their satisfying crunch!

  • Spinach is a true superfood for us pups! It's packed with iron and other amazing things like fibre, calcium, potassium, and Vitamins A, B6, and K. It's great for fighting inflammation and may even help prevent cancer.

  • Broccoli is incredibly nutrient-dense, packed with a ton of vitamins, folic acid, and fibre. Its low-sugar nature is excellent for maintaining stable blood sugar, and it provides awesome cancer-preventing and immune-boosting benefits!

  • Capsicum (Bell Peppers) are a fantastic and safe snack for dogs. They're loaded with vitamins and powerful antioxidants that contribute to a healthy skin and coat and bright eyes.

  • Zucchini is packed with vitamins and is a good source of protein without the extra calories. Just be sure to chop it up well, so it's easy for us to digest, whether it's cooked or raw.

  • Green Beans are a healthy and guilt-free treat for me! They're full of essential vitamins, minerals, and fibre while being naturally low in calories.

  • Celery can help freshen my breath while providing valuable vitamins and nutrients that contribute to a healthy heart and may even help fight cancer.

  • Peas are a great addition to a regular diet, full of protein, vitamins, and fibre! Just remember to steer clear of canned peas due to the added sodium.

Fruits & Veggies with a Paw-sitive Warning

  • Oranges: These give us valuable vitamin C, potassium, and fibre. The strong citrus smell might not be a hit with every pup! For those who don't mind, a little of the fleshy fruit is okay, but always avoid the peel and seeds.

  • Peaches: A delicious summer favourite, peaches are high in fibre and vitamin A. Feel free to share the fleshy fruit, but always remove the pit, as it contains cyanide and is toxic to dogs.

  • Mango: A nutritional powerhouse! Mangoes offer vitamins A, B6, C, and E, along with potassium. Just be sure to completely remove the pit and give them in moderation due to their natural sugar content.

  • Cantaloupe: A fantastic source of Vitamin A, which is great for eye health and may help lower cancer risk. Cantaloupe is also high in fibre and water, making it a great, hydrating snack. However, due to its higher sugar content, moderation is key, and you should always remove the rind and seeds.

  • Raspberries: A nutritional win for dogs! They provide fibre, vitamins, and anti-inflammatory benefits that are great for senior pups. Because they contain a small amount of naturally occurring xylitol, it's best to offer raspberries as an occasional treat in small portions.

  • Brussels Sprouts: A nutritional powerhouse packed with antioxidants for your dog's health. Just be aware: sharing might come with some… fragrant consequences!

  • Cabbage: A great source of antioxidants and potentially cancer-fighting compounds. However, like Brussels sprouts, be prepared for some potential gas!

  • Cauliflower: It provides valuable fibre and vitamin C while being low in fat. Just remember to give it to your dog in moderation, as too much can also lead to gas!

  • Kale: A nutritional powerhouse for dogs in small amounts, packed with beta-carotene, calcium, and antioxidants. However, moderation is key because of some natural compounds that we can't process in large quantities.

Keep Away! Unsafe Foods for Pups!

  • Cherries: The entire cherry plant contains cyanide, which is toxic to dogs. Keep us away from cherry trees and any fallen fruit!

  • Grapes & Raisins: These are highly poisonous to pups and should be strictly avoided. Eating even a small amount can cause acute kidney failure, so if you think your dog has eaten any, contact your veterinarian immediately.

  • Tomatoes: These are generally not recommended. The green parts of the tomato plant contain a toxin called solanine. It's safer to avoid tomatoes altogether, just in case.

  • Wildberries: It's crucial to never feed your dog wild berries, as it's difficult to identify them correctly, and many are poisonous to dogs.

  • Asparagus: Raw asparagus is difficult for us to digest, and cooking removes its nutritional value. Additionally, the asparagus fern is toxic!

  • Mushrooms: It's best to be extremely cautious and avoid sharing mushrooms entirely. With tens of thousands of species, it's nearly impossible to identify the toxic ones from the safe ones.

  • Onions: Along with garlic, leeks, and chives, these are toxic to pets. Even small amounts can cause vomiting and diarrhea, and in severe cases, they can damage red blood cells. Avoid all plants from the Allium family entirely.

  • Avocado: It is not safe for pups. The pit, skin, and leaves contain a toxin called persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea. While the fleshy part has less, its high fat content can still cause an upset tummy or even pancreatitis.

Final Pro Tips for Feeding Your Pup!

To ensure your dog can get the most from these foods, proper preparation is key. Because dogs lack the specific digestive enzymes to fully break down the outer walls of plant cells, you must make them easier to digest. The best methods include:

  • Finely chopping, grating, pulping, mashing, or liquidising.

  • Lightly cooking veggies like green beans or broccoli.

Important: Starchy carbohydrates like potatoes, pumpkins, and parsnips must always be cooked before being fed to your dog.

Safe Fruits & Veggies for Dogs: The Importance of Moderation!

Adding fruits and veggies to your furry friend's diet is vital for their overall health. However, balance is everything. While these foods are nutritional powerhouses, they should never make up more than 10% of your dog's total daily calorie intake. Too much can cause an upset tummy, gas, or even diarrhea, especially with fruits that contain natural sugars. When introducing a new fruit or veggie, start with just a small piece and watch how your dog reacts. If all goes well, you can gradually increase the portion size, always keeping it in that 10% treat rule.

Safe Preparation and Storage Tips!

Before giving any fruits or veggies to your pup, always wash them thoroughly. Peel off any hard or indigestible skins and, for fruits, be sure to remove all seeds, pits, stems, and cores, as these can be choking hazards and contain toxins. Cut everything into small, bite-sized pieces. To maintain freshness, keep prepared fruits and veggies in an airtight container in your refrigerator for up to three days, or freeze them for up to six months.
