Apples for Dogs: A Nutritional Powerhouse!

Apples are a fantastic treat enjoyed by both humans and their furry friends! Their satisfying crunch and sweet flavour make them a popular choice for many pups. They are a wonderful source of vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, beneficial antioxidants, and dietary fibre. Because they are low in protein and fat, they make a perfect snack, especially for senior pups.

  • Supporting Healthy Joints & Bones: The vitamin C in apples aids in the production of collagen, a crucial protein for the connective tissues in your dog's joints and bones.

  • Fighting Free Radicals: The antioxidants present in apples help protect your dog's cells from damage caused by free radicals. This protection can help reduce inflammation and may play a role in preventing the signs of aging.

  • Potential Cancer-Fighting Properties: Apples contain compounds with promising antiangiogenic properties. Antiangiogenesis is the process of stopping new blood vessels from forming, which is crucial for tumour growth. Some research suggests that components in apples may interfere with these processes, which is a key part of fighting cancer.

  • Dental Health: The act of chewing on apple pieces can help to gently remove plaque and tartar buildup on your dog's teeth and gums, contributing to better oral hygiene and fresher breath.

Important: How to Safely Serve Apples!

While apples for dogs are a great treat, it's important to know that not all parts are safe. Always follow these tips to ensure a safe and tasty snack:

  • Remove Seeds & Core: Apple seeds contain a small amount of cyanide, which can be harmful if a dog eats a large amount. The core can also be a choking risk or cause a blockage if swallowed whole. It’s always best to remove both.

  • Serve in Slices: Apple slices or small cubes make a perfectly yummy and safe treat on their own, or they can be mixed into their food.

  • Try Dried Slices: For a bit of crunch, dried apple slices can also be a great option for your furry friend! Just remember to always remove the seeds and the core first.

A Little Note from Us: Before trying any new foods with your furry pal, it's always best to chat with your vet first. This blog shares some of Pimmy's favourite eats, which have played a big part in her recovery journey after her MCT experience and in keeping her feeling her best. We hope this information is helpful, but please remember it's not a substitute for professional vet or dietary advice. Sending lots of love to your pooch, cheers!
